dwergs says: Barefoot - Barefoot |
| Paul Anka, Nouvelle Vague, Richard Cheese and dozens of others are doing it. No, not cocaïne (well, maybe yeah) but song reinterpretations. They don't just cover a song, they take it to a whole new level and rearrange it into a different genre, and that's usually loungy cocktail jazz. Relatively new kid on the block is Sam Obernik's band Barefoot, who releases their self-titled debut album today. Chances are high you've heard her version of "White Lines" in the background in a trendy restaurant before, or if you're a clubber you sure as hell have danced your socks off on Tim Deluxe's It Just Won't Do with Sam on vocals. Both songs are featured on the album, together with fresh material including Underworld's Born Slippy, Run DMC's It's Like That, De'Lacy's Hideaway and much more. dwergs says: Classic Lyric: Jon Cutler - It's yours |
|
It's yours by Jon Cutler is one of those tracks that sets the mood for me right whenever I hear it. And so it did last week when it was played in restaurant/club Shoko, Barcelona. It also set the tone for the rest of the night, carried by DJ Jekey's sauve mix of Motown funk and contemporary r&b. Although I must've listened to this song hundreds of times since it was released in 2001, I never understood the chorus, so thank god for the Internet: Jon Cutler - It's Yours lyrics Well, it’s yours What makes you journey into the night And take flight on a pursuit of musical bliss? Chasing beats through ghetto streets To a dungeonous temple left by our soul descendants In a quest for peace, energy and light. If you were to find this temple, Do you have the knowledge to enter the temple? Do you want it? And if you had it, would you flaunt it? Well, it’s yours! (Chorus) There is approaching light A-flowing, soaring through your world The fire burns within your heart And now it’s yours If you feel it in yourself I know the light goes through the stars Acquiring entrance to the temple is hard but fair. Trust in God-forsaken elements Because the reward is well worth the journey. Stay steadfast in your pursuit of the light. The light is knowledge. Do you want it? And if you had it, would you flaunt it? It’s yours!” (Chrous) Well, It’s yours Well, It’s yours You stay true to your quest. So let the beauty that is the musical universe engulf you. Recharge your spirit. Purify your mind. Touch your soul. And give you the eternal joy and happiness you truly deserve. You now have the knowledge. Do you want it? And if you had it, would you flaunt it? Well It’s yours!” Well, It’s yours Ahhhhhhh (Chorus x2) Well, It’s yours Well, It’s yours >> Listen to previews. |

dwergs says: Thank you Mario! But our princess is in another castle! |
Super Mario Bros was the first real videogame I ever completed. Three times in one loop even, then I paused it for my brother to see when he'd come home but the NES crashed an hour later. And once, I pretended to be sick so I could stay home from school and play The Legend Of Zelda all day... and the day after. From back in the early nineties until this day I'm obsessed with Nintendo's classics, but only in their 8 or 16-bit outfits (I pulled out from the moment they turned 3D). My idolatry expresses itself in a collection of Nintendo keychains, Super Mario magnets, pixel diorama's,... (see images) And while it helps being friends with a former Nintendo regional boss' daughter, I usually get my kicks from jlist.com. I know, I might have to see a therapist... ![]() |

dwergs says: Todd Terje |
|
Went to hear Todd Terje (aka Tangoterje, real name: Terje Olsen) play a dj-set in Café Capital this weekend. I first heard about him through his epical re-edit of Michael Jackson's "I Can't Help It" on Gilles Peterson's Worldwide and that track is quite representative for the sensual, dubby house and funk music he spinned on Saturday with an average BPM rate of 100. Not your average four-to-the-floor dance music. Most memorable set moment: a not-cheesy Whitney Houston "I wanna dance with somebody" remix being rewound two times before allowing the chorus to finally kick in. He didn't play the Michael Jackson track though :( >> Listen to a typical Todd Terje dj-set. |

dwergs says: Ben Westbeech... I feel so good today |
|
I'm in love with this untitled track by an upcoming artist called Ben Westbeech (sometimes written differently as Ben Westbeach). He's got a Jamiroquai-ish voice, but ventures into more complex rhythm parts. And because it's such a "feel good song" I set it as my alarm clock sound. Here's my throw at the lyrics (can anyone help me replace the question marks?): Ben Westbeech - Untitled "I feel so good today even though I can't find my way Your heart's been keeping you away Don't be afraid cause I know that (???) soon there'll come a day when you will turn around and say my heart's in such a lonely place gotta tell you now I'm feeling I feel so good today What about tomorrow? Come on I feel so good today even though I can't find my way Your heart's been keeping you away Don't be afraid cause I know that (???) soon there'll come a day when you will turn around and say my heart's in such a lonely place gotta tell you now I'm feeling I feel so good today What about to-mor-row? Tomorrow's come for me (???) its infinity I see My heart's been watching over me Gotta listen up cause I know that that this is not a game although i've tried to explain my feelings can't remain the same Gotta sort it out cause I know that/I'm older (?) Tomorrow comes again Life (???) My feelings still remain the same Gotta twist one up and roll over (?) (whispers: That's better) (?)" The track's not officially out yet, only on white label, so you're gonna have a hard time tracking it down. There's a link to a version ripped from Radio One's Worldwide show with Gilles Peterson at the bottom of this post. >> Download Untitled. |
